Altor: Stranded on Earth is the story of a young scientist who comes to Earth to do field research on mammals. He and his people evolved from reptiles and retain reptilian features, much as humans have from the earliest mammalian creatures perched on our tree of life. Chameleon-like, Altor can change his features to facilitate communication with other beings.
He is the spoiled son of important scientists on his planet, called “World,” and assumes everyone, and everything, including the space-planet shuttle, will wait for him. Because he lingers too long, mesmerized by the drama of a squirrel defending her little ones from snakes, the shuttle follows its programming and takes off without him. He is stranded, and perhaps assumed dead by the other members of the research team.
To survive, he must reach a cache of supplies previous explorers have left on a remote, Pacific North West island. He grieves the probable loss of his family and potential children on World, and then, equipped with three devices and his puppyish charm, Altor sets out to find a ride to the island cache.
As he bumbles along, a group of lonely humans gather around him and form a new family. A retired policeman, a 20-ish computer whiz, and a cynical, aging, still beautiful woman accompany him on the policeman’s boat. Their journey is complicated by a dangerous alien who also wants access to the extraterrestrial supplies left by Altor’s people. He drags along his reluctant minion, a human teenage homeless girl.
Finally, Altor faces a soul-breaking decision; does he abandon his friends and return to his own home planet? Or does he give up his future and save his friends?
